BY POPULAR DEMAND: IMPLEMENTING THE 2030 CHALLENGE: ENCORE PRESENTATION

Has your firm adopted the 2030 Challenge?  How about the AIA’s 2030 Commitment?  Is there a difference?  Have you implemented sustainability policy measures specifically addressing the goal of designing carbon neutral buildings by 2030? Are you thinking of adopting the challenge but still have some questions?

Last fall, COTE facilitated a lively overview and discussion of the 2030 Challenge at the 2^nd Annual Green Champion’s Summit.  One of the goals following that event was to reconnect with Portland firms mid year in 2009 at a time when new questions might be arising as firms initiate change inspired by the 2030 Challenge.  We hope to provide some answers to these questions, as well as help attendees:

1)       Recognize the mission of the 2030 Challenge as well as the environmental warning signs that inspired the call to action to the designers of the built environment.

2)       Identify specific action items, tools and implementation strategies outlined by both the 2030 Challenge and the AIA’s 2030 Commitment, which are intended to assist firms in meeting the suggested incremental targets on the path to carbon neutral buildings.

3)       Understand the steps taken in calculating projects energy use index (EUI) as well as tools available online to assist with those calculations.

4)       Recognize the importance of monitoring a set of metrics and baseline energy data throughout the stages of the design process- thereby providing for design decision-making that is influenced by energy performance and sustainability goals.
